  Introduction

Suppose there are hundreds of computers need clone, if you boot up them one by one with CD or U-Disk, you can imagine what a large project for an enterprise. To configure a non-disk 98DOS and clone from non-disk boot will save a lot of time and lighten workload. Here we will introduce how to configure a non-disk 98DOS.

Main application environment:

All environments with PXE booted net card

PXE

Short for Pre-Boot Execution Environment and pronounced pixie, PXE is one of the components of Intel's WfM specification. It allows a workstation to boot from a server on a network prior to booting the operating system on the local hard drive. A PXE-enabled workstation connects its NIC to the LAN via a jumper, which keeps the workstation connected to the network even when the power is off. Because a network administrator does not have to physically visit the specific workstation and manually boot it, operating systems and other software, such as diagnostic programs, can be loaded onto the device from a server over the network.

PXE is a mandatory element of the WfM specification. To be considered compliant, the PXE must be supported by the computer's BIOS and its NIC.

  Procedures:

1) Hardware: At least two computers (one act as a server, another act as a workstation), workstation should has a PEX boot net card, an exchanger or a hub.
2) Software: Win 2000 Server,DHCP,Intel PXE-PDK.EXE,Disundi.1,WinImage

1. System installation

Firstly, install Win 2000 Server system and driver on server end. And it requires the format of system partition be NTFS format, please run C: \winnt\system32\Convert C:/fs:ntfs in advance if it is not NTFS forma to transfer the partition to NTFS format. Install IPX and TCP/IP agreement and manually configure the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, etc. on the server. Please see following drawing for detailed configuration:

  2. The installation and configuration of DHCP

1) Run “Start”, “Setting”, “Control Panel”, “Add/Delete Programs” and “Add/Delete Windows Component” in turn.
2) Select “Network Service” and click on “Detailed Information” button to guarantee the “Dynamic Host configuration Protocol (DHCP)” option has been selected. Click “Next”, and insert installation CD as required to complete the installation of DHCP server
3) Run “Start”, “Program”, “Management Tool” and “DHCP” in turn after complete installation.
4) Right click the left frame of following drawing, select “New Scope…”. Open New Scope Wizard.

  5) Naming for Scope, suppose for 98DOS

  6) Input 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.244 in “Start IP Address” and “End IP Address” dialog boxes under “IP Address Range” interface.

  7) If there are other computers used some of IP addresses in the IP Address Range mentioned above, you can exclude these IP addresses in “Add Exclusions” interface.

  8) Set corresponding lease duration according to personal details.

  9) Select “No, I will configure these options later (o)” in “Configure DHCP Options” interface.

By now DHCP server configuration has completed. If you want to validate the configured DHCP server, please select a computer with systems installed, run Ipconfig /renew to see if computer can get IP address automatically.

3. Install and configure Intel PXE-PDK

During the installation, select “Install Without NT4 Server CD” and not select “Use the DHCP port(DHCP is installed on another machine)”, others are according to default options.
1) Run “Start”, “Program”, “PXE-PDK” and “PXE PDK Configuration Program” in turn, open PXE Configuration interface.
2) Click “proxyDHCP Server” in left list, see as following drawing. Run “Configuration proxyDHCP Server…” in “proxyDHCP Server” menu.

  3) Select “Client Options” label in popup interface and tick the Multicast discover. Change the Windows default of downmost Remote Boot Prompt Timeout (in Seconds) from 10 to 0 (This is a startup menu option, Multicast discover will skip the process of running troublesome DB during startup; 0 will save the menu waiting time and start by default way). See as following drawing:

  4) Click on “to BootServer Discovery List” button, and there will appear the following drawing. Change default of BootServer from 10 to 3 (DOSUNDI). Input IP Address into IP box: 192.168.0.1, and then click on “Add to Discovery List” button, click OK to complete settings. (Here is to choose the type of BootServer. We take DOSUNDI for an example, if you want to set multiple initiate modes, you can add APTiEST without change default 10.)

  5) Return to PXE Configuration interface. Select “proxy DHCP SERVER”->“client Boot Menu”->“x86pc(UNDI)”, right click “DOSUNDI1” in the right window and select “move entry up”. You will see “DOSUNDI” has moved into the first item, click OK to exit.

Here the whole PXE-PDK configuration has completed. If you want to inspect whether the PXE server configured take effect or not, please go to Start?Setup?Control Panel?Management Tool?Service, to see if there are Intel PEX MTFTP Service and Intel PEX Service, and it is in Auto-Boot state. If there aren’t, there must be some problems during PXE-PDK installation. Please manually boot if it doesn’t automatically boot.

4. Make startup image files

Make and edit a startup image with WinImage software, name the image file as Dosundi.1 and copy it into C:\program Files\Intel\Pxe\Pdk\system\Images\x86pc\undi\DosUndi. If you want to run multicast system directly during startup, you should make the multicast system program into image, or you should run corresponding order execution under DOS system.

5. AYGHOST Genie

1) Start up computer from non-disk, run corresponding order to enter into multicast systems.

  2) In order to operate multicast systems, please select Start AYGHOST with network support.

  3) The program will ask you to choose the type of net card, and then click OK. AYGHOST supports scores of common Internet cards. If your net card is not in these net cards, please add net card by using the program in MAKE-NET directory. (Please see appendix for detailed creating process)

  4) The program will execute automatically and enter into AYGHOST interface. Then you can make some interrelated operations

  5) Select multicast systems, and select mother disk as the sender. Boot other computers in the same way and select them as receivers. Press Enter key at transmit end after all receivers have been connected to clone the whole hard disk.
